23th of July, 1587. Croatoan Island.

After seeing our weapons, and after we marched in their direction, the natives decide to flee. Then Manteo their country man called to them in their own language, whom, assoone as they heard, they returned, and threwe away their bowes and arrows, and some of them came unto us, embracing and entertaining us friendly, desiring us not to gather or spill any of their corne, for that they had but little. You replied: ''We did not came to spill any of what is yours, but to live with you in peace and as friends.'' The Croatoans invited us to their town for a feast, and gave us a token so the rest of their people would recognize us as friends. After the feast, you made a drawing of their village in your journal. [option] Content with the friendly relation we created with the Croatoans we went back to Roanoke. ->file 1.6
